Abstract

This study explores the use of online video to create a new type of conversation that shares many characteristics with face-to-face conversation, but differs in specific ways, such as in the dimension of synchronicity. This situation allows for a merging of the advantages of an almost live conversation with other communication forms that take explicit advantage of asynchronicity, possibly leading to an entirely new communicative form, an unprecedented synergy between the synchronous and the asynchronous. Enabled by new online technologies, this new genre appears to have the potential to fill a communicative gap that other current communication technologies cannot, including the way in which it includes the speaker’s emotion and body language.
